Desert Yard Maintenance Guide For New Mexico
Desert yards look great when maintained — and abandoned within a single season when neglected. The line between those two states is smaller than people think.
The quarterly rhythm
Quarterly cleanups: late winter, post-spring-growth, post-monsoon, and pre-winter. That four-visit cadence keeps a desert yard reliably intentional-looking.
Don't over-prune natives
Chamisa, sage, agave, cholla — these all have their own shapes and should be allowed to grow into them. Maintenance is mostly weed removal around them, not pruning them.
Refresh the gravel layer
Decorative rock loses depth over years as organic material accumulates. A fresh ½-inch top dressing every 3–5 years restores the look.
