How To Control Weeds In New Mexico Gravel Yards

Most Rio Rancho and Albuquerque homeowners assume landscape fabric under their gravel will keep weeds out forever. It won't. Here's what's actually happening and what to do about it.

Why fabric fails over time

Landscape fabric blocks weeds growing up from the soil for the first season or two. But windborne seed lands on top of the gravel, organic dust collects in the rock, and within 2–3 years there's enough material on top of the fabric for weeds to root in.

At that point the fabric is doing nothing useful and is just making the yard harder to weed.

What actually works

Physical removal of the weed including the root crown. Spraying alone leaves the crown intact and the weed regrows within weeks.

Timing matters: pull weeds before they seed. A weed allowed to flower can produce hundreds to thousands of seeds that will haunt next year's yard.

Recurring maintenance beats yearly resets. Monthly visits keep the seed load down year over year.
