Why Overgrown Yards Become Fire Hazards in NM
Every dry season in New Mexico, fires start from preventable sources — and dry yard debris is one of the most common. Here's what to know.
The risk equation
Dry weeds, tumbleweeds, and brush pile up against fences, sheds, and the side of houses. One spark from a discarded cigarette, a power tool, or even sun-heated glass can ignite that pile.
Once the pile is burning, fences and structures catch quickly because the heat is concentrated right against them.
Simple risk reduction
Clear tumbleweeds and dry brush away from structures every spring.
Keep a 3-5 foot defensible zone of bare gravel or hardscape against the house.
Don't pile yard debris against fences — bag it or haul it.
